The Wait

Did you expect me to jump right into your mouth?
Did you think you could swallow me whole?
How can you quiet your hunger inside,
Without having tasted my soul?

Did you think I would fall right into your arms?
Did you think I would kneel at your feet?
How can I let myself fall into you,
When you're not even reaching for me?

If I were a jewel all covered with gold,
Would you hide me from pirates and thieves?
Or would you securely show me the world,
And risk what a blind man might seize?

You cannot hold the midday sun,
She carries her warmth away.
But you can depend that she'll come back to you,
To shine brightly upon you one day.

And so it is that I must turn away,
Until you are ready for me,
To show you the love that we're both dreaming of,
As real as you wish it to be.
